ChatGPT Data Agent: What Business Teams Should Test First

What changed
OpenAI announced a Data agent for ChatGPT Work that connects to approved company sources, investigates questions, and can create interactive dashboards. The launch names data platforms, document systems, semantic layers, and business intelligence tools as parts of the workflow.
The key idea is governed context. A useful business answer depends on the meaning of a metric, not just the columns available in a warehouse.
Why it matters
Natural-language analytics can expand access to data, but it can also spread a wrong definition faster. Terms such as active customer, qualified lead, and net revenue often have precise internal rules. If the agent uses a plausible but different definition, the dashboard can look polished while answering the wrong question.
OpenAI says connected-account permissions are enforced. Teams should still verify row, table, and column restrictions in their own setup before using sensitive datasets.
The first three tests
Start with a metric whose correct result is already known. Ask the agent to reproduce it, list the sources used, and explain the calculation. Then introduce a conflicting definition from an older document and see whether the system surfaces the conflict.
Next, ask a diagnostic question with no single obvious cause. Review whether the agent separates correlation from evidence and whether follow-up queries can reproduce the finding.
Finally, test an action request such as preparing a message or updating a dashboard. Keep external sending disabled. Confirm that the system proposes the action and waits for approval.
Governance checklist
- Assign owners for business definitions and semantic layers.
- Restrict connectors to the smallest useful scope.
- Log questions, queries, sources, outputs, and approvals.
- Create a route for reporting a wrong metric.
- Recheck dashboards when upstream schemas change.
The decision
The Data agent may reduce the queue between a business question and an analyst. It does not remove the analyst’s work of defining metrics, validating evidence, and explaining uncertainty. The strongest deployment is likely one where domain owners make trusted definitions easier for both humans and agents to use.
