Claude Text Watermarking: What It Can and Cannot Prove
Anthropic has explained Claude text watermarking. Here is what the signal means, how it differs from AI detectors, and where caution remains.

The short answer
Anthropic says newer Claude text can carry a watermark that authorized detection systems can check. The watermark is evidence that Claude may have produced or processed text. It is not proof of ownership, dishonesty, plagiarism, or who pressed the keys.
That distinction is essential for schools, publishers, employers, and platforms considering automated enforcement.
What changed
Anthropic published details about its watermarking approach and connected the work to transparency obligations for AI-generated content. The company also distinguishes provider watermark detection from statistical AI detectors.
Provider watermarking can use a secret signal known to the model operator. General detectors infer patterns from writing and can therefore behave differently across languages, genres, and heavily edited text.
Why it matters
A positive signal may show model involvement without explaining the human contribution. A writer may have supplied the reporting, structure, and edits. A model may have corrected grammar. The same signal should not be treated as a complete authorship judgment.
A missing watermark is also not proof that text was written without AI. Older models, other providers, short passages, transformations, or substantial editing may affect detection.
A responsible policy
Do not use a detector result as the sole basis for punishment or rejection. Preserve the tested text, detector version, date, confidence information, and appeal route. Ask what policy was actually violated and whether that policy was clearly communicated.
For publishers, process evidence is more useful than a detector score. Keep interview notes, source links, drafts, revision history, and fact checks. These records show how an article was made.
What to watch
Anthropic’s explanation notes transition work for older Claude models. Detection access, coverage, and reliability may change. Organizations should consult the latest provider documentation and test their policy on real edge cases before using watermark signals in consequential decisions.
